• SB 79 (Weiner housing bill) – Creates the possibility of redevelopment of all Wilmont (R2 & R3 zoning) based on that we are ½ mile from bus stops on Wilshire that come every 20 minutes.  With the increased height allowed by SB 79 and the state density bonus our 2-4 story residential neighborhood could be completely gutted to allow 6-8 story buildings to be built and the displacement of renters and rent control as we know it.  SB 79 does not require any affordable housing. SMRR is against this bill, Ben Allen, our State Senator is against this bill and you should be too.  Wilmont sent out an email with a Call for Action to members on Monday 5/26 to write State Senator Ben Allen and Assembly member Rick Zbur to urge a NO vote on SB 79 (EV)
• New City Manager, Oliver Chi, who has served as Irvine’s city manager since 2021 (JS)

 

• Heather Averick, Director of SM Housing and Human Services Department (7:30-8 PM).  She will provide an overview of the department and will discuss why affordable housing is being built on public land. Q&A will follow her update. 

 
 

• Jonathan Maldonado, Civil Engineering Associate with SM Engineering Streets & Services (8-8:30 PM).  He will be discussing the California Avenue Street Reconstruction Project.  This project will change the streetscape on California from Ocean Avenue to 7th Street.  We are interested in how this project got elevated via the Capital-Improvement-Plan (CIP) since the city is in poor financial condition, how much is the city paying for and what is the CIP process to identify the projects that will be worked on.  Q&A will follow his update.
