The Wilshire Montana Neighborhood Coalition held its monthly meeting featuring a special election edition with 10 City Council candidates speaking for 2 minutes each. John Cyrus moderated the event where candidates discussed issues including AB 1740, the Great Park housing proposal, and transparency in city decisions. Laura Wilson raised concerns about ongoing noise issues from the Pali House hotel, which had been converted without proper public notification. The meeting also covered upcoming events including Fire Service Day and the new Art on Ocean festival scheduled for August 8th in Palisades Park. Mayor Carolyn Tarosis and former Mayor Lana Negretti provided updates on city initiatives and public safety improvements, while candidates shared their positions on housing, homelessness, and business development in Santa Monica.

Wilshire Montana Neighborhood Coalition Agenda
Tuesday, May 5, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM (via Zoom)
The Wilmont neighborhood board meeting focused primarily on two major topics: the potential expiration of the joint use agreement between the city and school district for public access to school facilities, and updates on neighborhood grants. Steven Johnson from the Recreation and Parks Commission presented detailed information about the Master Facilities Use Agreement, explaining that the current agreement could expire in 2027 if the city ends annual payments of $12 million to school District next year, potentially affecting access to 30,000 plus hours of school facilities use annually. District is seeking parcel tax passage to compensate. The discussion included input from Mayor Caroline, School Board member Jennifer Smith, and City Council member Ted Wintere, who all expressed commitment to maintaining public access to school facilities. The meeting also covered updates on neighborhood grants, with Wilmont applying for a grant that would increase our funding based on household count, and public safety updates from the Santa Monica Police Department and Fire Department, including information about crime trends and upcoming Fire Service Day on May 9th.
