I. Guest Speakers: David Martin: Planning Director City of Santa Monica II. Discussion: The meeting with David Martin focused on affordable housing challenges in Santa Monica. Key points include:
Led a discussion about 2024 public events and outreach possibilities, such as the Montana Artwalk and Wilmont’s “Second Saturday” Summer music/movie series. We need to join these events to let people know about Wilmont and give more visibility. We need help and volunteers. Led brief discussion of city elections coming up… four seats on the Council. Board Members in Attendance:
Aaron Alpert: NRO Officer Chief of Police Ramon Bautista. Various topics touched upon: Staffing: Shortage initially, hired 55 new officers, still lower than 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Arrests: Increasing, both proactive and from responding to calls. Aiming for more self-initiated activity by officers. Community Engagement: Officers encouraged to interact with suspicious activity but respect privacy. 311 app Non emergency PD number: 310-458-8491 911 is able to accept text messages Cadet Program: Increased from 4 to 14 to attract young talents. Additional Initiatives:
The Santa Monica Police Department is making efforts to address staffing shortages, increase proactive policing, engage with the community, and tackle issues like homelessness and drug use. This includes new initiatives like the Therapeutic Transport Team and public service officer focus on parks.
